The engineering desk
Easing from a tight base / 2026-Q3
A regional market where technical credibility decides who gets the conversation. Candidates are commute-bound, the vocabulary is a filter, and the well-run niche desk beats the generalist on every metric that matters.
What makes this desk different
Cycle times, fee norms, and where the candidates actually are. The generalities of recruitment hold everywhere; these are the parts that do not.
Candidates are regional
An engineer changes employers inside a commute radius far more often than across the country, because plants, yards, and installations do not move. That makes the desk's working area geographic: the koffiemail and the regional network outperform national job boards, and knowing which three employers in the region are hiring is worth more than any tool.
Credibility is technical
A candidate hears within two questions whether the caller understands the difference between mechanical and mechatronic, between E&I and process automation. The intake has to be technically right, because a profile written past the discipline costs the desk its reputation with both sides. Consultants on this desk learn the vocabulary of their niche as a core skill.
Scarcity concentrates in niches
The wider manufacturing market has eased from its peak, but the niches inside it have not eased evenly, and some specialisms barely exist outside a few regions, which is what the figures below measure. That concentration is why the Spec Send works so well here: one genuinely scarce profile opens doors that no vacancy list mentions.
What the data says
IPMERC Futures currently reads Engineering and technical in the Netherlands as: easing from a tight base. There is more room than there was, and the market is still tighter than its benchmark.
12 of the 24 technical occupation groups are forecast to tighten further to 2030, from a Q4 2024 base where 23 of 24 are already tight; 7 hold and 5 ease.
Structure signal, UWV, period up to 2030
Manufacturing vacancy rate 5.1% to 4.0%.
Demand signal, Eurostat, period up to 2025-Q2
1.87m of 9.42m Dutch workers are 55 to 64, or 19.9%, against 20.5% in the EU.
Structure signal, Eurostat, period up to 2025, measured on the wider market
Dutch all-sector vacancy rate 5.1% to 4.1%, against 1.9% in the EU.
Demand signal, Eurostat, period up to 2026-Q2, measured on the wider market
Labour force growth of about 100,000 a year falls to a standstill after 2030.

What to practice on this desk
The engineering desk trains precision and regional work. Three skills pay for themselves first:
The technical intake. The requirement behind "we need a WTB engineer" is a machine, a site, and a team, and the questions that surface it can be practised.
The Spec Send. One scarce profile, a handful of chosen employers, and a call behind it: the core move of a niche desk, done deliberately.
Regional business development. The call list built on the region's actual employers, with a reason per name, beats any bought list.
